Who these terms are between
In these terms, "we" and "us" means Northcrest Skylights Leeds, and "you" means the person who asks us to survey, quote or install. We fit rooflights, roof windows, roof lanterns and sun tunnels in homes in and around Leeds, as far as 30 road miles out, and take on small commercial jobs of the same kind.
Our trading name, legal status and the geographical address the law requires us to give you are printed on every written quote. The work is done at your property, and there are no public premises where you can call in. You can reach us on 0113 436 0654 or at info@northcrestskylightsleeds.co.uk.
If you are buying as a homeowner, nothing here takes away your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Where something on this page would conflict with those rights, the law wins. For a commercial job, any terms that differ are set out in the quote.
The survey and the written quote
The survey is free and leaves you under no obligation. We look at the room in question and the roof over it, take measurements and photographs, and check any planning or conservation question that could affect the unit.
After the survey we send a fixed written quote that names the room to be lit, the unit chosen and its size, with the price for the job. The quote also states whether VAT is included. Each quote stays open for 30 days from the date printed on it. After that, the price may need to be checked again against what the unit costs at the time, and we will send a fresh quote if anything changes.
If, once the roof is opened, we find something that neither of us could have seen on the survey, such as decayed timber under the covering, we stop and show you. Any extra work and its price are agreed with you in writing before we carry on. Nothing is added to the bill without that agreement.
Accepting a quote and paying for the work
A contract between us is made when you accept the written quote, by signing it or by telling us in writing, including by email or WhatsApp, that you want to go ahead.
We ask for a deposit only where the written quote says so. When it does, the quote states the amount and when it falls due, and the deposit counts towards the final price. Where no deposit is shown, none is payable. The quote also sets out when the remaining balance is due.
Planning and conservation questions are checked before anything is ordered. Where a council consent turns out to be needed, the order waits until it is in place, and nothing is payable for the unit while it waits.
Your right to cancel
Contracts with us are usually agreed at your home after the survey, or by phone, email or WhatsApp. That makes them off-premises or distance contracts under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and as a consumer you can cancel one without giving any reason during the cancellation period.
How long the cancellation period runs
- For a contract that is only for a service, it ends 14 days after the day the contract is made.
- Where the contract includes supplying the skylight or rooflight itself, it ends 14 days after the day the unit comes into your physical possession.
- If we fail to give you the cancellation information the regulations require, the period is extended, by up to 12 months.
How to cancel
Tell us clearly that you want to cancel, by email to info@northcrestskylightsleeds.co.uk or by phone. A cancellation form comes with every quote and you are welcome to use it, though a plain written statement does the same job. We refund what you have paid no later than 14 days after the day you tell us, using the method you paid with.
If you want work to start sooner
We do not start work during the cancellation period unless you ask us to in writing. If you ask for an early start and then cancel, you pay a proportionate amount for the work carried out up to the point you told us. For a contract that is only for a service, once the work is complete at your request the right to cancel ends, provided you acknowledged that when you asked us to start.
Some units are made to measure for one roof. The regulations treat goods made to a customer's own specification differently, and if that applies to your order the quote says so and explains what it means for cancelling.
What each of us does on the day
Our side
- carry out the work with reasonable care and skill, using the unit named in the quote
- handle the Building Control notification where the work is notifiable
- make good the opening inside, with the reveal plastered and finished as quoted
- protect floors and furniture in the work area and clear our waste away
Your side
- give us safe access to the room, the loft where needed and the roof, including space for scaffolding or ladders
- clear the area under the opening, or tell us beforehand if you need a hand moving furniture
- tell us about anything you know of in the roof or ceiling, such as earlier leaks or materials that need special handling
- get any consent you need from a landlord, freeholder or management company, and let us see it
Roof work cannot go ahead in heavy rain or high wind. If the weather stops us, we tell you as soon as we know and agree a new date with you.
When the work falls short
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says our service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and that anything we said or wrote about the work and relied on by you is binding. The unit we supply must be of satisfactory quality, fit for its purpose and as described, and it must be installed correctly.
If any of that is not met, tell us and we will come back and put it right at no cost to you. If that cannot be done, or is not done within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience, you are entitled to a price reduction, which in some cases can be a full refund. The Act sets out further remedies for goods, and our terms do not limit them.
On top of those rights, each job we complete comes with our 10-year workmanship guarantee, and any warranty the maker gives on the unit itself stays with you. If something goes wrong and we have not settled it to your satisfaction, our complaints procedure sets out the next steps.
Responsibility for loss
We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if it was obvious it would happen, or if both of us knew it might when the contract was made.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability the law does not allow to be limited. On a domestic job we are not responsible for business losses, such as lost profit or interruption to a business run from the house.
Using this website
The guides and answers on this site give general information about skylights, rooflights and the rules that cover them in England. They are written with care, but they cannot account for your particular house, so treat them as background until we have surveyed your roof. Links to other websites, such as government guidance or WhatsApp, are there for convenience, and those sites are run by others.
The words, drawings and photographs on this site belong to us or to the people who licensed them to us. You are welcome to print or share a page for your own use, but please do not copy it for commercial use without asking. How we use personal information is covered by our privacy policy.
Governing law and changes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute about them can be heard in the courts of England and Wales. The version of these terms in force on the date of your quote is the one that applies to your job. We may update this page from time to time, and any change is shown by a new date at the top.
