What the guarantee is
When we fit a roof window, a flat rooflight, a lantern, a sun tunnel or any other unit, we stand behind the way it was put in for ten years from the day the installation is finished. The guarantee is ours: it covers the work our team carried out on your roof and in your room, and it applies to new installations and to replacements alike.
There is a good reason for it. A rooflight sits in the most exposed part of the house, facing every kind of Yorkshire weather, and the places where water could find a way in are the joints we make between the unit and the roof. Those joints are our responsibility, and the guarantee says so in writing.
What it covers
The guarantee covers faults in our workmanship. In practice that means the parts of the job we build and seal ourselves:
- Weathering, meaning the way the unit is sealed into the roof so rain runs past it and away.
- Flashing, including the flashing kit around a roof window and the dressing of slate or tile against it.
- Upstands and kerbs we build on flat roofs, and the felt, EPDM or GRP detail we form up them.
- Fixings, so the frame stays secure and true in the opening we made or prepared.
- Making good, meaning the lining, insulation and plaster of the reveal or light well, finished as the quote described.
If water gets in at a joint we formed, a flashing we fitted lifts away, or the plaster of a reveal we finished cracks away from the frame because of how it was done, that is a workmanship fault and it falls under the guarantee.
Where the maker's warranty applies instead
The unit itself, meaning its glass, its sealed glazed unit, its frame, any motor, sensor or blind, comes with the manufacturer's own product warranty. That warranty is the maker's, it runs on the maker's terms and for the maker's period, and it sits alongside our guarantee. A sealed unit that mists because its edge seal has failed, for example, is a product question for the maker.
Some other things fall outside a workmanship guarantee by their nature:
- ordinary wear over time, such as weathered seals on a handle or a faded blind;
- damage caused by other people, whether that is a roofer working nearby, a dropped tool or a ball on a flat roof;
- alterations to the unit, the roof around it or the reveal made by anyone other than us after the job is finished.
Keeping gutters and the area around a flat rooflight clear of leaves and moss helps the unit and the roof alike, and the simple care involved is covered in flat rooflight upkeep.
How to make a claim
If you think something we did has not held up, get in touch with a short description and, if you can, a photo or two of what you are seeing inside and out.
- Contact us by email at info@northcrestskylightsleeds.co.uk or by phone on 0113 436 0654. Tell us the address and roughly when the work was done.
- We arrange an inspection and come out to look at the unit, the roof around it and the room below.
- We find the cause. If it lies in our workmanship, we put it right under the guarantee.
- If the cause lies elsewhere, for example in the product or in damage by others, we explain what we found so you know where to take it next.
Our written quote and your completion paperwork are useful to keep together with the guarantee, since they record what was fitted, where and when. The Building Control record of the work belongs with them too.
Where the guarantee fits in the job
The guarantee is the last part of a job that starts with a free survey of the room that needs the light, carries on through a fixed written quote and the paperwork, and ends with the reveal plastered and finished inside. The way a survey runs is set out under darkest room first, and see how prices are worked out on the costs page.
If you have a question about the guarantee before booking, ring us on 0113 436 0654 and we will talk it through.
